Awwwwwwww

Why is that the most common response when we see something baby related? I was recently helping my sister in law with ideas for a baby shower, and almost all things that were cute and tiny resulted in ‘awwwws’. As much as I wanted to give input, all that I could muster where ‘awwwwwws’. And in actuality it took a lot of effort to not say that word, like it had become a bad word.

All of this had me thinking of the knit baby goals I had set for myself at the beginning of the year. All I had completed were two blankets and some booties (but they weren’t all that cute). I had enough left over baby yarn to create a sweater, my only problem was that I had never created one before. It has been about 5 years since I was around a newborn, so appropriate sizing was not accurate at all.

I knit this yellow hooded baby sweater (from red heart yarns), and since my gauge was off (I know tisk tisk) I knit the larger size. The sweater looks gigantic for a baby. I usually follow gauge directions, but this once I thought it would be okay. Boy was I wrong! The sweater was knit in panels and the sleeves and hood were knit by picking up stitches. It was quite a simple pattern to follow. The garter stitch, I think anyway, makes it look boring. Aside from it being an easy knit, there is nothing special about the sweater. And although it’s not bad, I’m not too confident about gifting it at the baby shower.

So, I have started writing a pattern to create a baby sweater that resembles the yellow baby blanket that I knit. This time I will have correct sizes and measurements and I will knit accordingly. I don’t want to end up with another toddler size sweater for a baby. Also, I will make the buttons the length of the row, not just three at the top. The sweaters look classier with a full column of buttons.

I hope to show you pictures soon!
